Ethiopian Religious Festivals Tour
Feel the heartbeat of the people: experience Timket, Ethiopian Christmas, Meskel and other festivals in their original setting, with processions, music and prayer that have changed little over centuries.
A living spiritual tradition
Ethiopia’s religious festivals offer rare access to a living spiritual tradition that has changed little over centuries. On these sacred days, towns and landscapes become places of continuous prayer, music and ritual, often unfolding through the night beneath open skies.
Processions, ancient liturgy and communal worship take place in their original setting. Pilgrims still arrive on foot, drums still shape the rhythm of prayer, and food is prepared over open fires. These are not staged events, but lived expressions of faith. With careful planning and local expertise, we build each journey around the most suitable festival, so you can witness Ethiopia at its most profound.

Ethiopia’s major religious festivals
Most dates follow the Ethiopian calendar. Fasika and Eid move every year, so contact us for the exact dates of your trip.
Ledet / Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) · 7 January
Witness the patience and joy of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians as they break their fast and celebrate with a spectacular mass of song and church music through the night. The holiday is followed by feasting with family. Christmas is celebrated all over the country, but Addis Ababa and Lalibela are favourite places to experience it.
Timket (Epiphany) · 19 January (20 January in leap years)
Follow the holy procession of priests, deacons and believers through the streets, then wake early the next day for the blessing of the waters, when believers commemorate Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan. Gondar is the most famous place for Timket; Axum and Lalibela are also wonderful options.
Fasika (Ethiopian Easter) · date varies, usually April or early May
Fasika ends the 55-day Lenten fast, during which you can try some of Ethiopia’s finest vegetarian food: lentils, split peas, chickpeas and vegetable stews with injera. On Easter eve, join the night mass and light candles; the next day is for family and feasting. Easter is especially colourful in Axum and Lalibela.
Enkutatash (Ethiopian New Year) · 11 September (12 September before a leap year)
New Year’s Day marks the end of the rainy season and the start of the new year in the Ethiopian calendar. Families decorate their homes with yellow Meskel daisies while young people sing, dance and exchange greetings.
Meskel (Finding of the True Cross) · 27 September (28 September in leap years)
Meskel is a festival of fire and smoke that celebrates the finding of the True Cross. According to tradition, the smoke of a fire led to its discovery in the 4th century. The largest celebration takes place on Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, where a huge bonfire, the Demera, is lit at dusk. The Gurage and Dorze peoples in the south are known for their especially lively celebrations.
Kulubi Gabriel (Feast of Saint Gabriel) · 26 July & 28 December
Walk with pilgrims to the church of Kulubi Gabriel near Dire Dawa, and witness the processions, ceremonies and acts of devotion as pilgrims fulfil their vows and bring gifts to the church.
Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan) · date moves every year
Travel east to Harar, Ethiopia’s historic centre of Islam, to experience the most important celebration of the Muslim year, with communal prayers, festive meals and visits to family and neighbours.

Rock-hewn monasteries, nature and black Africa. The overall impression of our private 15 day stay in Ethiopia is really good. We've founf what we expected most: living ancient history, monasteries and a visit to Natives in the South. Axum offers the great place of holy monuments, the morning processions held there are exquisite. Do not miss Balthazar's tomb. Wildlife; we were happy to ser hipos and crocodiles in natural environment. The Natl Museum in Addis is a must-see. We found the smartest and knowledgable guides in Gondar and Axum. Local flights and ca drives were ok. Roads are bad, yet this was not a surprise. Best hotels on our route were located in Lalibela and Gondar. Do visit this vibrant, unpretentious and friendly country. Zbyszek MiśkiewiczPosted on Tripadvisor

Amazing trip with vast Ethiopia tours!! Highly recommend! Our family of 6 traveled with VAST Ethiopia tours in March 2024 and had an amazing experience! We visited Addis Ababa and then took a trip through the southern region of Ethiopia, including Bale Mountains NP, Dorze Village Arba Minch, and Hawassa. The guides were skilled, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful. We loved every minute of it.Posted on Tripadvisor

Unforgettable and unique Ethiopia. Magic and diversity in one country We have made a group of 30 people an unforgettable trip through the North and South of the country. It's all been very interesting. The North with its gem La LIBELA and the interesting places of Gondar and Simiens Mountains. And in the south the amazing wonders of the HAMER, DASSENECH, KARO and MURSI tribes along with the KONSO and DORCE people...With Vast we have not had any problems and we have made the trip as planned in the program... fulfilling the agreed and always trying the best for the group. It is the second time we have done ETHIOPIA in a group and for another one!!!!Posted on Tripadvisor

A great team! Book with them For many years, I’ve had dreams of visiting Ethiopia. Finally, that opportunity arose for us in May, 2024.I asked friends for recommendations and we were pointed to Habtu Marye and Vast Tours. And we were lucky to find them.I spent some time online researching the things I wanted to see. But being the local experts, I relied on them to take our list, put it in the most logical order, and then they even added some things that I didn’t realize would be important for our visit. We had four full days in Addis. A short time considering everything there is to see in the country. We realized we had to limit ourselves. We spent three days in Addis and one day we headed out of town with Debre Libanos as our destination goal.We were partnered with Abay as our guide and Tesfaye as our driver. They were a great team and we thought we were fortunate to have them. They shared a wealth of knowledge about the sites we were visiting, took us places regular tourists never would have seen, and even gained entrance to several sites otherwise closed when we were there.we felt safe with Abay and Tesfaye. We were cared for. And they took us to restaurants offering wonderful local foods. We believe we saw everything we could in the short time we were on the ground. Of course, there still is a vast country beyond what we saw but that comes with a future visit.Without a doubt, I would use this tour company again and specifically the staff. And you know, that’s the strongest recommendation I can give!Posted on Tripadvisor

Best Agency for Planning Ethiopia Trip My wife and I compared several agencies before booking. We found Vast to be the most responsive, most affordable, and most complete. Habtu and the Vast team planned our two week Ethiopia trip and were flexible in adding and removing activities although the schedule was already very complete. I am happy to say the trip was incredible. Vast takes safety first and prioritizes customer safety. The hotels we stayed at were always the best in the city we would visit. our trip was suitable for all ages and we will be recommending Vast to all travelers who want to visit Ethiopia!
Frequently asked questions
When should I book a festival trip?
As early as possible. Hotels in Lalibela, Gondar and Axum fill up quickly around Christmas and Timket, so we recommend booking several months ahead.
Are visitors welcome at the ceremonies?
Yes. Visitors are warmly welcomed. Dress modestly, remove your shoes when entering a church, and women are expected to cover their hair inside churches. Your guide will explain local customs.
Do the festival dates change?
Most festivals follow the Ethiopian calendar and fall on the same date each year, sometimes one day later in leap years. Fasika (Easter) and Eid move every year.
Can I combine a festival with a tour?
Yes. Festivals combine perfectly with our North Ethiopia Tour, for example Timket in Gondar or Christmas in Lalibela, or with a visit to Harar for Eid.
