Journey to the East: Harar, the Walled City, and Awash National Park

The walled city of Harar provides travelers with a stark contrast to the Christian highlands in the North or the animist tribes in the South. Oft considered Islam's fourth holiest city, the 16th century walled city, known as the Jugol, is nothing less than stimulating with its alleyways, whitewashed walls and more than 90 mosques.

VET's 'Journey to the East' takes you and your fellow adventurers first to Harar to experience a night in the walled city. For the next two days a local Harari guide will take you through Harar's colorful markets, the streets and the curious history. Since the presence of hyenas are almost automatic on the streets of Harar, paying a visit to the courageous Hyena man is necessary. Visitors can decide or not to feed the hyenas themselves.

The fourth day takes us to the mysterious landscapes of Babile and the rocky Valley of Marvel. Here a light day hike will give visitors a much needed break from the chaos of the narrow alleys and hyenas of Harar. After the day's activities, we drive to the "new" city of Dire Dawa, raised in early 20th century as a stop on the Addis-Djibouti railway and spend the night.

After another day and night taking in the tranquility of Dire Dawa, visitors traver west to Awash National Park. Here, visitors have the choice of staying at the Awash Falls Lodge or camping in the savannah among the baboons, monkeys and occasional crocodile. The next day, a game drive through the park and a stop at Filowaha, Awash hot springs, where visitors can go from hot to hotter. Return to Addis, back to the big city, back to elevation and a farewell dinner.
